Stop the establishment of the AMD CELL and the import of the Early Warning Radar

On February 17, 2009, The Solidarity for Peace And Reunification of Korea(SPARK) had a emergent press interview, in front of the Ministry of the Defense Department, Yongsan, Seoul, Republic of Korea,

The SPARK members participated by some of the members of the families of the political conscious prisoners explained that;

‘ On Feb. 15, The Ministry of the Defense Department, Republic of Korea announced the establishment of the AMD Cell and the import of the Early Warning Radar. Moreover, the Defense Department plans to establish so called the Korean style Missile Defense by the import of the PAC-3 and SM-6 which would be fit to the Aegis Destroyer King Sejong… It means the systematic subjugation process of the Korean MD into the U.S. MD system would be accelerated.’

They claimed the three;
1. Stop the establishment of the AMD Cell and the import of the Early Warning Radar that would totally subjugate the so called the Korean MD into the US MD!
2. Stop the building of the mad Missile Defense system aiming the preemptive strike against the North Korea!
3. Stop the building of the MD that reverses the current mood!

USFK commander Walter Sharp says U.S. closely monitoring N. Korean missile, artillery, Feb. 16, 2009

Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea, on Feb. 9 said the United States is closely monitoring North Korea not only for its long-range missile activities, but also for its short-range missiles and artillery fires deployed near the military demarcation line.

While speaking at a meeting with foreign news correspondents in Korea, Gen. Sharp said the ROK and the U.S. have “excellent radar positions” that can accurately identify the exact location of any North Korean missile launches. He also said the joint forces will counter any aggression with artillery and air forces, noting the planned relocation of frontline U.S. troops to south of the Han River will further strengthen their capabilities.

Regarding the recent news reports that North Korea’s military may have gained more influence in the communist nation, Gen. Sharp said there are no signs of such a development, also noting the size of winter exercises of the North Korean military remained similar to those of previous years. Commenting on the North Korean nuclear issue, he said the U.S. demand was “for North Korea to verify that they do not have nuclear weapons and to denuclearize.”

Regarding North Korea’s demand to verify nuclear capabilities of USFK, Gen. Sharp said the U.S. could consider the option after North Korea first agrees to its verification protocol. “We, the United States, and the other countries of the six-party talks look forward to that day so that we can work these details out,” he said.

Regarding the troop level of USFK, Gen. Sharp said he is confident the troop level will be maintained at 28,500 even after 2012 when the wartime operational control of ROK military will be transferred back to the ROK military from the U.S., also noting the currently one-year tour of U.S. troops to Korea will be extended to three years.

Gen. Sharp also noted there will be changes to the joint command of ROK and U.S. militaries, saying the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff will be responsible for maintaining the Korean armistice and the wartime operational control of troops.
