Prof. Yang was released around 4pm on April 12, from the police. While the fine issue should be still resolved, after the talks with his attorneys, we were glad to welcome him to Gangjeong again. The photo is by David Fox who took the photo of Prof.. Yang when the villagers had the interview with him in the Jeju police office on the evening of April 11. Through a holed glass plate, the detained and people outside talk with each other using the mikes. A Gangjeong villager, Boreun Doragi, who has covered the excellent blogs on Gangjeong took many photos of Prof. Yang, proof photos of the damaged navy propaganda facilities and his tent in the Joongduk coast with the wonderful writing on Yang and his arrest. Please SEE HERE.

1. Visiting Gangjeong Village People’s Council Building

To interview with Prof. Yang Yoon-Mo, many villagers gathered in the office of village People’s Council early in the morning. The building is also for the Gangjeong youths’ gathering and cultural events. The first thing that you face when you enter the building is the big red letters of ‘Death-Defiantly, No Naval Base!’ and ‘Resign! Kin Tae-Hwan!' (the current Island Governor), each were written in the front glass gate. There are also the notice papers that says, “No Government Officers to Enter,” in the gate and door inside, that reflect the Villagers’ anger against the government policies that not only ignore people’s opinion but also oppress them.

Two villagers held the banner in front of the building of the Gangjeong Village People’s Council. The banner says:
To Keep Gangjeong Is to Keep the Peace of Jeju!
-Lawyers for the Democratic Society, Research Institute on the Issues of the United States Forces of Korea’

2. Documents Posted on the Walls and Columns in the Office

Inside the Village People’s Council office, you find all the walls and columns are covered with the scrapes of the newspapers, leaflets, documents, and statements that reflect the villagers’ strong will to fight against the Jeju naval base plan. The papers are also covered in the window.

3. Villagers Having the Interview, again, with Prof. Yang Yoon-Mo In the Custody Room of the Police Office

About 20 villagers went to the Jeju police office to have the interview with Prof. Yang in the morning. In the photo, villagers are standing in front of the interview room to take the interview application procedure with the police. ID cards were requested for it. The last photo is the villagers receiving their returned ID cards after the interview. While all the villagers returned back to the village, Mayor Kang Dong-Kyun, with a villager, Mr. Jung stayed in the city of Jeju for hours to meet the attorneys for Prof. Yang. The two could eventually bring Prof. Yang to Gangjeong, in the afternoon on the day.

4. Village of Blue and Yellow

As the yellow flags of ‘Death-Defiantly No Naval Base,’ flutter by the characteristically strong winds of the Jeju Island, in the village and in the Joonduk coast where the reclamation plan threatens the rocks and creatures there, if it is to be covered by the concrete for the construction of the naval base, you may find how the color of yellow well fits to the village of blue Halla Mt. and sea where the yellow tangerines in the green trees are abundant in the village and Rapeseed (Brassica napus) and special kind of dandelions appear among the rocks in the Joongduk coast.

5. Joongduk Coast again

Artist Kim and I visited the Joongduk coast again. The first thing that you may find is the information board on the Joongduk coast, the 2nd course for the tour of the Gangjeong village which is called “the village of water.” The villagers and the Jeju Solidarity for Participatory Self-Government & Environmental Preservation have set up, that informs of how precious creatures living in the sea and coast. The peace post made by the villagers stands there, as well. You can also see the Beom Islands (the biggest beyond the coast, with a flat top in the photo), Sub Island & Moon Islan(the two smaller Islands in the left side) beyond the coast and Ssuken Island( the Island in front of the Sub Island & Moon Island: It is the Island that has the phenomenon as when Mose crossed the Red Sea in the bible). The areas of Beom Islands and Moon Islands have been designated by the Natural Preservation Area by the UNESCO because soft coral inhabitants and extinction-risk sea creatures live there. Knowing that, it is hardly tolerable to hear the naval base plan.

6. Prof. Yang Yoon-Mo’s Vigil Tent in the Joongduk Coast

Here is a tent of Prof. Yang Yoon-Mo, the movie critic, the arrested but released the next day. He has lived in this tent for more than eight months. Two villagers put the banner made by the visiting high school students, on the top of the tent, on the day he was arrested early in the morning by the Jeju police. The banner says, “Please keep Gangjeong!” Inside the village, beside the small tent he sleeps in, there are lots of the living facilities the villagers might have presented to him. I laughed seeing even the couch inside the tent. Artist Kim who guided me to the tent posed on it, for me, because I told him I needed any creature in the tent for my photos. Boreum Doraegi, a Gangjeong villager has the excellent and photos and coverage (Korean) in his blog on the arrest of Prof. Yang. Please see HERE.

7. Some Lives in the Joongduk Coast

Artist Kim says even though he has lived in Gangjeong for more than eight months, every day is wonder for him to find and enjoy the many unexplored things here in the Joonduk coast. There were not only crabs, shells, seaweeds that color the water as green, among rocks but also cactus, and Korean Wild Chive (Allium monanthum) he enjoys to have on his meal table.

8. Gangjeong Port and the Naval Base Public Relationship Office

The Gangjeong port is in the western side, walking from the Joongdul coast. It was traditionally a small port but now the big seawalls have been set up around it to expand the port. According to the artist Kim and villagers, the sea-diving women (Haenyeo 해녀) in Gangjeong have been in favor of the naval base, far different from the strong opposition by other sea-diving women in the Hwasoon & Weemee, the 1st and 2nd candidate areas for the naval base plan, but cancelled now and Beobhwan village, the neighborhood of Gangjeong village and who would be also affected by the naval base plan. Villagers say the reason that the sea-diving women in Gangjeong were tempted by the navy was because most of those were illiterate. Near the Gangjeong port area, there are the sea-diving women’s center and fishing community buildings. Since most of those were known to be in favor of the naval base plan, the villagers in the farming community who are in strong opposition of the naval base plan seem not to like to come here. There is also the naval base public relationship office. The Navy flag along with the ROK flag and Island flag are fluttering there. The last photo is a villager who have the greenhouse nearby the coast and who is opposing against the naval base plan. He says how much labors have been contributed to build his green houses and concern about the prospect that his would be also destroyed once the naval base comes in Gangjeong.
